Ceyana Canoe Club

Trips

Ceyana volunteers organize trips ranging from local, easy paddles, to extended trips and whitewater excursions. We encourage early contact with the trip coordinator to ensure that a trip will not be cancelled for lack of interest, or be over subscribed. Sometimes, club trips are organized just a few days before departure as opportunities and interest dictate. Check the tripping calendar often and watch your email for new trips. You must be a member to attend any overnight club trip, or a guest of a member for our day trips.

How Skilled and Experienced a Paddler are You?
The club has received permission to use the Paddler Self Rating Guide from Mark's Guide for Alberta Paddlers Click on this link, have paper & pencil ready, and work through this guide to determine if you are a Novice, Intermediate or Skilled Paddler for lakes, rivers or whitewater.  This will help you choose appropriate trips to match your skills, and maybe encourage you to take in a paddling and/or rescue courses.
Organize a Trip of YOUR OWN!

Ceyana is always looking for more people to organize trips. If you have a trip in mind, work with the Trips Chair to have it added as an official club trip. You don't necessarily need to lead the on-water portion of the trip--the Tripping Chair can help you find someone to fill that role. Contact info can be found here: Contact

A note to non-members...

Registrants are advised to sign up for club membership well in advance if you interested in a course or trip and are not already a member. As an organization wholly run by volunteers we do not have a full time admin to immediately answer questions or handle website issues. Membership payments paid by credit card are usually confirmed much faster than e-transfers or cheques. Our membership term runs through the calendar year so signing up early ensures you receive all pre-season club updates and early notification of courses and trips.

All club trips must be approved by the club (usually by the Tripping Chair) and participants must be current members of the Ceyana Canoe Club to participate on any overnight trip.

Course Change, Cancellation and Refund Policy - Please read the policy on this link before completing any program registration that involves a payment.

Trips Schedule

    • 13 Apr 2025
    • 6:00 PM
    • 12 May 2025
    • 8:30 PM
    • Local WW Day trips, Whitemud, Sturgeon, Lobstick, Blindman
    Register

We like to limit our early season WW runs to club members who have all their own gear, and experience and skills appropriate for Class II rapids, rock gardens, logjams, sweepers, tricky channels and beaver dams.  These are generally fun runs, sometimes still plugged with ice jams, and a portage maybe required, and given the nature of spring break-up, there can be tight channels and corners with surprises!  GOOD PADDLING skills are required.

Our goal is to have interested paddlers register (no charge) so we know who is interested!  We could also use a volunteer or two to help with the communication and decision making of what runs are appropriate. If interested please register, if willing to help please email our Trip Chair... help make his/her job a wee bit easier, and let the Trip Chair know which runs you have done, and which runs you are willing to lead or help lead!

These trips are most often weekend day trips, occasionally mid-week evening runs, and given our "retired folk #s" even mid week day trips could be possible.

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big wind, etc.  It is best to register so our leader can send out last minute instructions or cancellation by the time you leave from work!

    Register

Kristoff and Neil are offering to tackle the Sturgeon River again this year, a little earlier in hope of more water.  This Run is NW of St. Alberta for some 15 km.  This run does require modestly good moving water skills, especially an ability to avoid fallen logs (sweepers), log jams, read shallow gravel bars, and to control your canoe to turn, control direction, ferry and eddy turns.  The plan is to meet at 9:30 AM and you should be home by late afternoon. You must arrange all your paddling gear, come prepared for a spring thunderstorm, and bring lunch & drinks.  We will meet at 10 AM at Cunnighham bridge on Meadowview Road.

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big wind, etc.  It is best to register so our leader can send out last minute instructions or cancellation by the time you leave from work!

Long time club member and Edson resident Ralph has again offered to lead a spring trip on Wolf Creek, just east of Edson... a very fine day run with modest WW.

This run requires club members have all their own gear, or arrange for such, the experience and skills appropriate for Class II+ rapids, rock gardens, logjams, sweepers, tricky channels with modest flows.  This is generally a fun run, there can be logjams and sweepers, tight channels and corners with surprises!  GOOD PADDLING skills are required.

Ian, Leila and Maggie have offered to take a crew up for the Lakeland - Jackson Lake Paddling circuit.  This is a multi day trip.  The trip starts with a 3 km portage in (and then out later) to Jackson Lake, but NO shuttle!  Portage Carts are available on site, though often at the other end of the trail, best to bring your own well tested carts (the club has such). And pack light!!

This circuit can be done in a couple of days, or easily take 4-5 days to fully complete.  The lakes are scenic, full of wildlife, sandy beaches, warm water, and a multitude of campsites are available for modest sized groups.

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big winds, major storm fronts in the forecast, etc.

Check out the AQ Outdoors Guide to this trip for more information, maps, etc.  You can do much less than the whole 43 km, and have a great paddle!

We'll meet, unload and put-in at the upstream end of the  Sir Wilfred Laurier Park Boat Launch... above the rocks.  Then park up the hill, and not in the trailer zone!  Come with some refreshment, and be prepared for spring weather. Register
This white water weekend is for experienced river paddlers on rapids up to Class III for all the runs, and Class II for some of the runs.  It is early season the water will be cold. This is our traditional Wildhay weekend but as we plan this trip the snow pack is low and we anticipate mostly paddling in Jasper Park.  But maybe the Wildhay will be "up."
    1. We have the entire Kinky Lake Campground booked (24kms west of Hinton on HWY16) as we have guaranteed paddling on Athabasca River in Jasper. Driving Kinky Lake to Old Fort Point (our take out for the Athabasca River runs) is approximately 60kms. On the Athabasca River we paddle the full section from Below the Falls to Old Fort Point which is 34 kms of great scenery and up to Class 3 water.

Less experienced paddlers may skip the upper run (9kms) and join at Meeting of the Waters (Whirlpool joins the Athabasca). See Mark’s Guide For Alberta Paddlers for detailed river information.

    1. This trip is for whitewater boats, with full floatation. Paddlers must have dry suits or wet suits.
    2. Camp cost at Kinky Lake is $50 per camp unit for the weekend. There are 10 campsites each with a picnic table, a lake to practice on and toilet facilities.
    3. IF the Wildhay has enough water we could consider paddling it on the Friday or the Sunday.

    • Twin Lakes Group Campsite in Crimson Lake Prov. Park
    • 22
    Register

This is one of the prettiest lake front group campsites in Alberta!   And close by there is lots of paddling: big & small lakes, rivers and modest whitewater in the area.  Our most popular paddling over the years has been the runs on the North Saskatchewan: the Horburg run with Devils Elbow, the Blue Bridge Run finishing at the Brierlies, the Brierlies and downstream, and runs on the lower Clearwater river.  Besides Twin Lakes, we've paddled both Crimson and Cow Lakes in recent camps.  We are booked in Thursday through Monday morning so that those with time can arrive early, and leave Monday, and enjoy the site longer and leisurely!

This is a large group site and we will be sharing the site with a mix of Ceyana educational programs, and volunteer run day trips, on lake, easy river and modest whitewater.  Members are welcome to join us for the camp life to just "chill!"

Like all camping in Alberta... it does cost, and we are just passing on the expected average per unit expense.

These are the "Earlybird" fees (up to and including May 19, 2025):
    - 4 nites at $165 per unit /tent/rv/etc.
    - 3 nites at $125 per unit
    - 2 nites at $ 85 per unit.

These are the"Regular " fees after May 19, 2025 ($20 more for camping):

    - 4 nites at $185 per unit /tent/rv/etc.
    - 3 nites at $145 per unit
    - 2 nites at $ 105 per unit.

    Registration opens February 16, 2025.

Be sure to register only one person for camping... guests will be charged if you register them... Camp fee is per camp/sleeping unit!  It is best to fill up our tent or RV with family and friends to keep the per head cost down!

You will be asked to indicate if you are in an Ed program or coming to day trip.  Given we have some one day Ed programs, both are possible!  Day trips will be organized each morning of the camp.

All camp participants must be a member of the Ceyana Canoe Club, or another Alberta canoe club affiliated with Paddle Alberta!

Camping is rustic, well water, fire pits, clean toilets, camp kitchen and NO power!

Contact Mark Lund <lundmer@gmail.com> for any questions about this trip.

Early Bird Fees must be paid by May 19th, then Regular Fees apply.

Please review the Course Change, Cancellation & Refund Policy.

Cancellation or Change deadline for refund is May 19th, 2025.

Registration will open after our AGM, on March 23th.

Located approx. 25kms North of Nordegg on the Trunk Road
    (734) & Chungo Creek road, the Blackstone River is a skill step up from the upper section Wildhay river, thus Class II-III. We have booked the Blackstone Group campsite, which is on the river (just off the Chungo Creek Road) and divides the upper run from the two lower runs so there is a variety of paddling options. The group site has a big cook shelter, fire pit, picnic tables and toilets but otherwise is off the grid. The upper run of approx. 2 hours is a thrilling paddle thru a narrow canyon with constant 90 degree turns. The run from the group site to the trunk road (3 hours; 17 kms) is more open and adds in some ledges, while the run from the trunk road to the gas plant (25kms) has more standing waves.

    Please:

    • These river runs are for white water kayaks and canoes with full flotation, float bags required.
    • Dress assuming you will swim in cold rivers; wet or dry suit and carry extra dry clothes with you in a water proof bag.HELMETS ARE REQUIRED!

Kristoff has been scouting this trip out.  We don't often get out to paddle the NSR above and below Drayton Valley.  This run below Blue Rapids includes lots of braided channels, log jams, sweepers, interesting gravel bar chutes making for some easy Class II water.  Good River paddling skills are required, especially for maneuvering in a hurray around the logjams and sweepers.  You will learn to keep an "eye" downstream at all times.

There is lots of wildlife and "near" wilderness along this reach.  The river valley is wide, scenic, and modern civilization's intrusions are limited.

Kristoff is planning to meet early at Wiley West campground, drop vehicles, paddle back and camp for one night, and then the second night camp on the River.

You will be responsible for booking your own campsite at Wiley West.

We Ceyana paddlers have been invited by Allison Ireland and Don Mitchell of BWCC to join them for the Canada Day weekend on the Red Deer River.  We're going early this year, hopefully more water than any of us had in '23 & '24.

The Ireland's have the finest hay meadow in Alberta for group camping, it is though a bit of hike up from the river.  The meadow includes some fine facilities, outdoor plumbing, and a hay shed for cooking and gathering under.

The plan is to gather Friday evening, or whenever you show up.  Then do day trips on the nearby reaches of the Red Deer river, these vary from about 17 to 35 kms.  The river is consistently Class I with short stretches of easy Class II water around gravel bars, some gravel bar chutes and the occasional large glacial erratic in the river.  There are few sweepers or logjams on this reach... thank-you Dixon Dam!  And just the occasional island for channel selection decisions.

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big winds, major storm fronts in the forecast, high water >150 cms, etc.  It is best to register so our leaders can send out timely instructions or cancellation!

    Registration is closed

Over the years we try to paddle all the reaches of the Red Deer River and it has been sometime since we paddle the reaches above Drumheller.  Last year we finished at the Tolman Bridge.  I've been trying to book a group campground, but no luck so far... we maybe fighting on a first come - first serve basis for camping.  If this changes I will update this note and advise all registrants.  I have closed further registration until May 15 by which time I should have our camping options sorted out.

The plan is to gather Friday evening, or whenever you show up.  Then do day trips on the nearby reaches of the Red Deer river, these vary from about 14 to 20 kms.  The river is consistently Class I with very little Class II water around gravel bars, some gravel bar chutes and the occasional large glacial erratic in the river.

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big winds, major storm fronts in the forecast, high water >150 cms, etc.  It is best to register so our leaders can send out timely instructions or cancellation!

    Register

We have Dad Jokes Day, Cake on the Lake and we also have Liver on the River.  Come join us for a moving feast and social on the NSR.  We meet about 5:00 PM at Laurier Park, organize the shuttle, and hopefully we're back and on the river by a little after 6:00 PM.  We float down the river and enjoy a shared buffet on the water.  Hopefully someone besides me remembers the "pate", (from home, from Auntie Sunterra), crackers, sausage, cheese, garden produce, sweet treats, and not much paddling!  BYOR(refreshments)  By mid-August  the bugs should be missing, the sun is still out and hopefully there is still water in the river!

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big winds, major storm fronts in the forecast, high water >350 cms, etc.  It is best to register so our leaders can send out timely instructions or cancellation!

And best if you are a club member, but guests are welcome for one or two of these sessions, then our insurance company much appreciates you taking out a membership, as do we!

    • 6

The Yukon River is a Class 1-2 river in the Yukon Territory running from Marsh Lake in the south to the Bering sea in the north. We will only be paddling from Carmacks to Dawson--404 km of mostly wilderness but a bit of civilization every once in a while. We plan on stopping at certain historical locations like Fort Selkirk along the way, paddling at a moderate pace for 10 days. Solid river paddling skills and knowledge of rescue skills are required due to the remoteness of the river.

The dates do NOT include travel time to or from the Yukon, so at least 3 days will be required at the beginning and end of the trip if people will be driving up. We will be camping at Carmacks for one night at the start and at Dawson for one night at the end.

Registration will open once we confirm pricing for camping and other items yet to be determined. We will also have some planning meetings for all who register to work out logistics such as meals, equipment, and travel.
