About Us
The Ceyana Canoe Club was incorporated in 1978 and at times over the past thirty plus years has been the largest canoe club in Edmonton. At the moment the club has a membership of over 225 paddlers.
The Ceyana Canoe Club offers a mix of family-oriented canoeing and kayaking programs. The club offers an instructional program for new members, approximately three club trips per month, a seasonal social program, and maintains a storage facility for the club canoes, kayaks, trailers, and associated gear.
The club has been instrumental in the past with: the Klondike Days Canoe Regatta, the development of Dragon Boat Racing in Edmonton, has committed officers and resources to the Rundle Park Paddling Centre, the 2008 David Thompson Brigade and has long been a major contributor of volunteers to Paddle Alberta - our provincial recreational paddling association.
Here's the story on our name: the 1978 Commonwealth Games, held in Edmonton, had a mascot called Keyano (the bear). We were told at the time that Keyano means friendship or togetherness in the Cree language. We asked the Commonwealth Games committee if we could use the name and the answer was yes, but Keyano should be spelled with a "C" and an "a".
